Building a powerfull central content repository

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Asset types

In general, we can distinguish the following types op assets:

 ·      Images

·      Videos

·      Documents

·      Content fragments

Embedded in this document is an overview of all file formats that are supported in the 6.2 version of AEM Assets.

Asset quality

Since assets are likely to be used on several platforms we need to make sure that we upload assets that have sufficient quality to be used. The required quality differs per type of intended use. When it comes to source images, bigger is better, because you can go down in size, but not up, without losing quality.

As a guiding principle, we urge you to always upload the original files, without compression, as they have been created by the agency or photographer. These files are usually called ‘native’ assets and from these native assets the DAM system can automatically produce so called renditions, which are smaller and usually different file types and have a different purpose, e.g. publication on the web

Native

Native file types that ensure an optimal performance are:

  • RAW

  • TIFF

  • PSD with layer masks

  • PDF

  • PNG

  • AI

  • INDD

  • EPS

Intended usage

Obviously, assets will have different kinds of intended usage and with their intended usage they will also have different quality requirements. We have listed the main requirements in this document, together with a short list of file formats. This is by far not a complete list of supported file formats. Please refer to the overview of supported file formats later in this document to check if your asset file format is supported and which features are supported.
