FlexIT: from IT distributor to sustainability provider

As Marketing Director we led the repositioning of FlexIT - from a generic European IT-hardware distributor into a sustainability provider that steers buyers towards refurbished, circular products. A story of prove, profile and finance.

FlexIT - Leading Circular IT

The challenge

FlexIT operated in a market where almost everyone sells the same products and the same content: manufacturers supply their specs via CNET and Icecat, making every web shop interchangeable and leaving no one with domain authority. The ambition: turn sustainability into a distinctive position and move buyers towards refurbished, circular hardware - in a price-driven, conservative market.

The approach in three steps

We built a chain most distributors do not build: prove, profile and finance. Each step reinforces the next, and it is the combination that makes it distinctive.

Prove: independent impact data

We engaged Ecochain as an independent authority to build a circular extension of the PAIA method, using the ecoinvent database. This made the environmental impact of both new and refurbished hardware audited and comparable across four categories: CO2, resource use, fossil fuels and particulate matter.

Profile: a product-level sustainability score

Evidence only becomes valuable when the buyer sees it at the moment of choice. Every product received a sustainability score (A-E) and impact figures per category, plus a CO2-reduction indicator. A 'circular fingerprint' matched products to a buyer's sustainability preferences.

And because the whole market uses the same CNET/Icecat content, we produced our own product photography and CGI - brand-owned, indexable imagery that differentiates and builds domain authority.

Four steps to carbon-neutral

01

CO2 footprint

Calculate the emissions of a product or service via a life cycle assessment (LCA).

02

CO2 reduction

Reduce where you can - refurbished already saves the production impact.

03

CO2 compensation

Offset the remainder via Gold Standard/Fairtrade-certified projects.

04

CO2 communication

Communicate the substantiated story transparently to all stakeholders.

Finance: from offsetting to European budgets

We offset the remainder through FairClimateFund (Gold Standard/WWF + Fairtrade) - for a few euros per device. Along the same line ran the circular product line 'HP Approved Selection by Flex IT', launched as a Dutch pilot and grown into a European line, with HP and Microsoft monitoring the process. And the big lever: tenders and European Green Deal budgets that stimulate exactly these models.

The result

A distinctive, evidence-driven sustainability position in a market full of sameness - and a model that is transferable to almost any sector. From cost centre to revenue model.
