Carbon offset calculator for IT hardware
Calculate at a glance what it costs to make your hardware carbon-neutral - and how much you already save with refurbished. Part of the 'finance' step of our sustainability model.
Illustrative example values based on an LCA reference (incl. HP 650 G5). For exact figures use an independent LCA (for example via Ecochain); offset price indicative (Gold Standard/Fairtrade).
How does carbon offsetting work?
Carbon offsetting means cancelling out the remaining emissions of a product or service by investing in certified climate projects. You first calculate the footprint (via an LCA) and then offset the remaining volume - for example through FairClimateFund with CO2 credits certified to the Gold Standard (WWF) and Fairtrade Climate Standard. At around 17.5 euros per tonne, an entire hardware fleet is often carbon-neutral for a few euros per device.
Why refurbished makes the difference
Refurbished hardware has a far lower footprint than new, because the most impactful phase - production - has already taken place. In practice that quickly saves 40 to 50% CO2. So you offset a smaller volume, which lowers the cost of becoming carbon-neutral even further.
From offsetting to European budgets
Offsetting is the last step. The truly distinctive move is to (co-)finance those costs - from tender processes and the immense European Green Deal and recovery budgets that stimulate exactly these circular models. Precisely the route many organisations do not yet see.
From cost centre to revenue model
This is how you turn sustainability into positioning and funding.
